Everyone has heard about Polish vodka but not many people seem to know about Polish nalewka. And that is very wrong because nalewka is THE Polish speciality, very typical of the country's tradition. What is then nalewka? Polish Nalewka is an alcoholic drink of about 40-50% alcohol by volume, which has a natural flavor, usually herbal or fruity. The flavor is derived by maceration of herbs, fruits or spices which are placed in alcohol. Other substances, e.g. sugar, honey or syrup are often used too. Polish nalewka 'Ziolowa'
Drinking a well-prepared nalewka is an awesome experience, comparable with tasting a good wine. |

Mead belongs to those Polish specialties which deserve much more attention than they currently get.
It was mead, together with beer, which was the earliest alcoholic drink known in Poland. It was used there as early as in the 10th century and even before. (Indeed, mead was one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in the history of human civilization.)
Polish Mead - "Poltorak" (oneandahalfer) small bottle
Since wine was never a dominant produce among Polish-made drinks, mead was its local substitute to some extent.

The 7th annual Pierogi Festival in Krakow took place on 14th-16th August. Several restaurants and food producers presented their offers.
There was a lot to taste: pierogis with different fillings, either cooked or fried with their crispy golden crust, as well as traditional oscypek cheese from the mountains.
 Pierogi Festival in Kraków
Live music was played onstage. And not just Polish folk music. As it turned out for example, sung jazz standards go very well with Polish pierogi! See our photos of this event.
If you want to take part in the next Pierogi Festival, visit Poland and Krakow next year!

How to make Polish Sliwowica (Polish Slivovitz)
This is a basic recipe for Polish Sliwowica.

You will need:
- About 5 kg (about10-11 lbs.) fresh plums
- A fermentation pot and empty bottles
- A distillation setup
Get whole, ripe or even overripe, fresh, good quality plums. Using right fruits is crucial for success! No dried prunes or things like that are allowed. Remove the stems. Wash the plums, when they’re dry cut them into pieces. Removing the stones is not recommended for a "real" Sliwowica. But you can do it if you want. The taste is going to be somewhat smoother then.

How to make Polish Prune Bread?
As we have already mentioned in our post about Polish bread, there are a lot of kinds of bread in Poland. Among them are of course wholegrain breads. Breads of this type very often have additional ingredients to enrich their taste. The most popular of such ingredients are sunflower seeds. Another interesting and often encountered possibility are prunes.
Below we present a popular recipe for home-made wholegrain prune bread. On the picture you can see a loaf of bread made according to the recipe. The bread was prepared by our reader from the U.S. She told us that not only was the bread tasty, but making it was fun too. We’re sure it was and the nice loaf on the picture is a proof of that.
If you like preparing food, try making your own prune bread!
